SMP or Scalp micropigmentation is a medical grade tattoo. It is applied in various size dots to the scalp or skin in a manner that mimics real hair. Specialized pigments are placed at a certain depth utilizing a hand held device specifically designed for the application of SMP pigments. This procedure is often performed at some clinics without any local anesthesia and this can be uncomfortable and possibly not tolerated in those with sensitive scalps therefore Dr. Gerbrands who is fully trained in anesthesia offers local anesthesia to De Haar patients ensuring your comfort.
SMP is ideal for those who wear their hair shaved and close to the scalp but have a distinct noticeable pattern of balding or patches in areas that are lacking hair follicles. SMP creates the bold masculine look of a full head of hair that has been shaved and is not detectable even at close distances. Micropigmentation is a wonderful tool for use in clients who have alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis and want the look of a full head of hair that has been shaved.
It is an excellent method used for scar revision, where the scalp has sustained trauma due to accident, or prior surgery and has resulted in scars. Using SMP on scalp scars makes them virtually impossible to detect and can be used in conjunction with an FUT procedure after healing has taken place.
It can also be used to create the appearance of thicker mustaches and repair facial scars that run through the mustache.
Micropigmentation can be utilized to create custom eyebrows, the appearance of thicker, fuller eyebrows frame the face giving a more pleasing and appealing look.
SMP procedures are typically done in two to three sessions depending on the skin type and will require a touch up every 3-6 years depending on how you care for it. Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and the use of a sunscreen or hat will help preserve the integrity of your SMP thus lasting longer before a touch up is required.
